Hi KR :)

According to this site, there was a census held in October, 1861:
http://www.nso.gov.mt/site/page.aspx?pageid=577

How you would get hold of a copy is uncertain.  According to another site: "The National Statistics Office takes the census, but oddly provides no information on how to get access to earlier censuses. In 1994 they were said to be open for inspection at the Public Library in Valatta (or Victoria, for the island of Gozo) and that the library would look up a specific entry "provided you could give exact address." "

Could have been, gortonboy - Rachel is down as born "Malta Depot"...

I just found this:
(page37 - The enumeration of the Army)
"Members of the British Army stationed abroad were never fully enumerated. Instead the military authorities provided the Census Office with information as to the numbers of officers, other ranks, wives and children, either by place or regiment. Nominal information on this considerable body of men and women was never collected as part of the nineteenth-cnetury censuses."

Hi
Have you looked at this web site?

http://website.lineone.net/~stephaniebidmead/other%20sites.htm

the link will take you to Malta Family History
click on Index of Baptisms Recorded by Army Chaplains 1800-1900, scroll down to Parker.  There is this entry - Rachel Parker 1859 22nd Regiment -  unfortunately no other details.

also on the above site, The British Army Garrison Malta 1851-1880
gives that the 22nd(The Cheshire) Regiment 2nd Battalion arrived on Malta in the May of 1859 and that the they left on the 6th July 1865

Thanks for the replies,

I am not sure if John was in the Army, I did wonder that.

I looked on the Malta site & noted the bap for Rachel 1859 22nd Regiment and assumed that it was her, but it didn't actually give her parents name.
There was also a bap on the site,1866 Ann dr of John & Margaret 60th Rifles, so I posted a similar question on the Army board.
I did get a reply but that John Parker wasn't mine,

I can't find a census for 1861 in Lancashire for John & Margaret, but I now know that they were back in England by 1863, for the birth of son William, cert states John's occupation as Mechanic.
