William BYRNE - Son of Michael BYRNE ?
« on: Tuesday 29 November 11 14:40 GMT (UK) »
Hello all - its me again as I continue this search for my wife's ancestors.

Now looking to see if anyone had resolved the parentage of a William Byrne who married Anno Byrne in 1826.

I have read many threads in various forums discussing the matter.

Seems his "father", Michael Byrne (Minerva), was with a Susannah Roberts and two boys around that time. Looks like Susannah was the mother, but was Michael the father or did he just team up with Susannah with 2 kids already in tow?

Interested to know if anyone knows any more about this.

Brendan

Hi there,

From the NSW BDM online index of their Early Church Records, I note that the 1826 marriage was by RC rites at St Mary's (Cathedral) Sydney.  Have you considered approaching their archivist to see if they have further details about the couple?

The mc seems to be indexed three times, so perhaps it was conducted elsewhere and the record transmitted to St Marys.

Volume 127 line 152 has this as William BYRNE and Nanno BYRNE
Volume 128 lines 150 and 152 has this as William BYRNE and Nano BYRNE
(I presume it is written once in Volume 128, but across several lines)

What information do have to suspect Michael Byrne (Minerva) was his father?

Can you tell me where William & Nano/Anno Byrne resided & raised their children?
I can see some information in one of my books that could be them.

Hi there,

I can see several chaps surnamed BRYNE on the Minerva :

Andrew, who married twice, firstly 10 Sept 1812 in Sydney to Mary LEWIN (ex the ANN)
Richard, born 1774 who married Margaret KELLY (ex the EXPERIMENT)
Thomas, born 1772 (as per Therry's records) and/or Thomas born 1776
as well as your possible chap, Michael.

Do you have William's likely year of birth, presuming he was born in the colony  ;)

Cheers,  JM

Thanks for responding.

I have been looking at various sites, forums and bulletin boards and see a number of references to the issue.

Our link is through Winifred Byrne who married a John Woodland (I have found a reference to this marriage occuring on 22 Dec 1853 at St. Saviours CofE Goulbourn NSW Reg. 6034, but haven't sighted anything).

We understand Winifred was the daughter William Byrne and Ann (Anno) Byrne (this was both her maiden and married name). Winifred was born on 22 May 1836 Campbelltown, NSW and christened at St. Mary's Sydney. Again there appear to be references 1836 / V1836816 129 and others which I haven't sighted.

Anno Byrne was the daughter of the infamous Hugh Vesty Byrne and Sarah Dwyer. I don't think there is too much doubt about this (lots of online references to this guy). Anno was born at sea on the Tellicherry on the way to Australia around 1806.

The question is who was William Byrne, Winifred's father?

There are discussions like the attached as others seek this information. General consensus seem to indicate William was the son of a convict, Michael Byrne who arrived on the Minerva. I don't think there are too many Michael Byrnes arriving early enough if indeed William was his son born in 1807.

Also in question is who was William's mother? Some references to a Susannah Roberts, possibly from the Glatton, but nothing definite.

A good bit of the above is assembled from many postings, but my initial query to this forum related to whether anyone else had researched and resolved this.

Hope this all helps.

Brendan

I hope this link works, it is someone with info and questions about your William and Nanno  ;D

http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/AUS-CONVICTS/2011-06/1307800161

It includes this snip "Michaels son William married Ann/Nanno Byrne who was the daughter of Hugh Vesty BYRNE and Sarah DWYER."

Perhaps Brendan can check it out further  ;) as the query is from June this year (2011)

Cheers,  JM
