Hi Napier,it was a custom used to preserve family names. For instance when a woman married her surname would change but her maiden name could often be passed on as a second name to one or more of her children. My own mother had a surname as her second name as did six of her seven siblings. These ranged from the surname of her mother (my grandmother) to that of her great grandparents, with two having the surname of my grandfather's step father as a second name.I myself have a former family surname as a second name.It was usually family but not always. It could be the name of a close or respected friend or possibly even that of the person that delivered the child. In most cases however it would be a former family name.

Hi

Do you have an indication of Jane Foote's age. There is this family that look possible:

1841
Seagate, Dundee

Peter Kennedy, 70 Mer(chant)S(eaman)
Jean Kennedy, 40
Mary Stewart Foot, 15, M W (? Mill worker)
Jean Foot, 15
Mary Kennedy Foot, 12

All b. Angus

Note that those 15 and over were grouped into 5 year age bands : 40 = 40-44; 15 = 15-19, etc.

Jean and Jane are used interchangeably in Scotland.

If this is her, her mother might well be Jean Kennedy but will need to investigate further.

Re the surname as middle name. It seems to occur quite often. I have it in my lines (even today) and it is a great help in identifying lines. I don't know why it was used apart from thinking that it was to rember surnames/links  that might otherwise have been forgotten.

added - I see that Carole has added to her post - only the first marriage was showing when I  looked:

Is this the marriage?

PETER SMITH     Spouse:  JEAN FOOTE    Marriage:  08 FEB 1850   Dundee, Angus

Surnames were sometimes used as first names too (especially popular in the NE of England).

In one of the Scottish lines I am researching has the employer's surname as a daughter's middle name - he was obviously well respected.

I have others which have no obvious connection to family. You can get very caught up in trying to find out which relative a child was named after, but it can just be a wild goose chase....

Further to the 1841 Census info (Reply #3), there are these baptism of children of James Foot(e) and Jean Kennedy. All Dundee.

11 March 1821 (born 25 Feb) Hannah Martin Foot
20 Dec 1822 (born 4 Dec) May Stewart Foot
23 Jan 1825 (born 16 Jan) Jean Foot
19 May 1828 (born 3 May) Mary Kennedy Foot

No proof but I wonder if Jean Kennedy's mother was a Hannah Martin and father Peter Kennedy?
