Hi,
I am now looking for the whereabouts of HOGGINS ROW, NEATH ABBEY.

Again can't find it on any map we have looked at.

Keeping fingers crossed again.  Thanks in anticipation

Hi
I noted that on the 1871 census Hoggins row is followed by Old Road, maybe some one knows that?
also on the same census sub district is Cadoxton  village hamlet has- Neath Abbey also Duffryn /Clydach could  Hoggins Row be further up the valley from neath?  the cottages/ houses could have been errected next to a mine in the valley. Hoggins being the builder of the houses or the mine owner?
Just athought :-\
cheers cardiff :)

Hello  :)

Could it have been Hawkins Row and the enumerator heard Hoggin's?

I found Hawkins Row in the civil parish of Dyffryn Clydach, Neath in 1881. This is a hamlet of Cadoxton so the right area.

Well I am now full of turkey, Christmas cake, mince pies and chocolates not to mention all the extra snadwiches and nibbles over the festive season.  Its back to work on Tuesday a stone heavier - how will I get in and out of my car?!!

Anyway thanks everyone for your answers.  My husband has come to the same conclusion Cardiff - it is a row of houses built by Mr Hoggins or Hawkins but now part of the much longer road.  He did ask in Neath library but came away disillusioned.

Its funny because once the older generation of people leave us we no longer know these houses as their old names.  My mother's home village is an example of this - she knew every house by a name or row of terraces by their old name and not as 124, Heol ......

Diolch.

Blwyddyn Newydd Dda SNG  :)

In 1706 a William Stanley of Neath Abbey was Sheriff of Glamorgan, and the under-Sheriff was one Thomas Hawkins.

The Gnoll Estate papers (held at West Glamorgan Archive Service) mention Thomas Hawkins of Neath:

Slaters directory of 1858/9 lists a Thomas Hawkins of Cattle St, Neath under Outfitters, Thomas S Hawkins of same street under Tailors, and Thomas Shore Hawkins (same street) under Linen and Woollen Drapers. I assume that these all relate to the same man.

Obviously Hawkins was a well-placed Neath family  :)

My hubby's grandmother lived in Hawkins row as a child.  I am endeavouring to find out where this particular street was.  Anyone who knows the area I remember her telling me it was opposite St. John's church.   But where was it attached to St. John's terrace, or has same terrace be renamed.
