Good Morning Colin,

The baptism at South Shields St.Hilda,

Thomas Cameron, born June 18th 1810, baptized August 8th 1810, 2nd son of Francis Hall, Gentleman, Native of Whitby Yorkshire, by his wife Mary Cameron, Native of Gateshead Newcastle.

Doesn’t mention Francis being a Soldier or his age, so this info must be from another source. He could have been attached to one of the Yorkshire Militias, who were often stationed at the coastal ports during the Napoleonic Wars.

Baptized same day as Thomas at South Shields is :

James, born Nov 28th 1809, baptized August 8th 1810, 1st son of James Watson, Shipwright, Native of this place, by his wife Mary Hall, Native of Hull Yorkshire.

Could be a nephew of Francis, given mothers maiden name and birth place, or could just be a coincidence.

There is a marriage of a Francis Hall, Gentleman, and Mary Cameron. Woodbridge, Suffolk, by License, 13 Nov 1806.

Woodbridge was a garrison town during the Napoleonic wars, lots of soldiers from different Regiments were married on the same page as this Francis. If this is the right Francis, the fact that he was again referred to as a Gentleman, rather than Rank and Regiment, would indicate that he was attached to the Army in a civilian capacity, rather than as a soldier.

Hi Wolfiesmith,

Thanks for that info, I found the info re Army Officer on the baptism link on Find my Past last item Other Info: Father: Army Officer. If as you suggest many army units around Woodbridge, might be an uphill struggle to get any more Info. I found him on the 1841 census in Hull shown as a sailmaker, his fathers profession in Whitby and Hull. Could he had worked for the military making sails?

Have a great New Year

Colin,

There are two Francis Halls in the 1814 Army List of Officers.

One is a Lieutenant in the 14th (Duchess of Yorks Own) Regiment of Light Dragoons.
The other is in the list of Officers in the Commissariat Dept. This was a unformed civilian service concerned with procurement of supplies and provisions.

Hi Alan, if I was a beting man it would certainly be the latter, Francis  is not from a military background, and eventually he took over his fathers business. If Woodbrige was a garrison town then civilian would be needed and as you suggested he would be addressed as a gentleman but hold the rank, much the same today.

Is there any chance you could send that detail?

Thanks once again

Following up Wolfie and the Woodbridge marriage of Hall/Cameron strangely enough that marriage was on Wednesday 12 November 1806 from Diocese of Norwich Consistory Court Records. The 13 November marriage is "submitted" by individuals multiple times.  Images of the Consistory Court records are on the Internet  on familysearch.org but no index. Over a thousand marriages in the years around 1806. More information may be on the Court Records but the Woodbridge Parish entry may be easier to find.
