Wondered about this one for 1851

Hannah aged 30  Labourer  Unmarried
Thomas aged 9
Joseph aged 9
Mary aged 6
John aged 1

All born Lunedale, Yorkshire.  Parish of Romaldkirk.  Registration District Teesdale.

Can't find them unfortunately in 1861 to see if maybe there was a John Snr (Carpenter) around

Yes, I think that is them. I have tracked all 3 brothers in the Durham coalfields in later life and it all fits.

I just can't get back any further and am intrigued that Hannah appears to be a single mother of 4 kids! Now that would be unbelievably hard work then. How did she keep them together?

Thanks

Ahah! Someone else trying to solve John's parentage!

His eldest son, George, was my great great grandfather. I am in the same situation as you - I have him sorted from 1871, know that he had 10 children and know the date etc. for the marriage (though I didn't know his father was also a John). I think the real trouble is the constantly "changing" birthplace. It makes it very difficult to track down the correct child.

I'd love to hear from you about your branch of the family. I have a picture of George knocking around somewhere that may be of interest. Unfortunately I know little about the family beyond what I've found in the census records...

Oh, as a quick follow up. I found a record several weeks ago on IGI that could be pertinent. At the time I didn't know the fathers first name, and the record was in Cumbria, so I filed it away.

It's a christening record for a John Sowerby, son of John Sowerby and Hannah Sowerby. 6 Jan 1850 at  St. Michael, Appleby, Westmorland, England.

Having checked a map, Appleby-in-Westmorland is not entirely unreasonable - it's about 23 miles from Middleton-in-Teasdale. The mother's name being the name of John's eldest daughter bodes well. I'll follow it up a bit more now; but thoughts?

I know for certain John hailed from the Middleton-in-Teesdale area as I have a newspaper cutting about his 65th wedding anniversary in 1933 which confirms that. Helped by a family story that John and his brothers 'came down from Teesdale to work in the pits'. Actually, the story was 7 brothers but I think that is a confusion with the provable fact that he had 7 sons who all worked in the same pit with him.

So I am still keen on the 1851 Romaldkirk census entry for Hannah Sowerby (unmarried) and her 4 children. I have an IGI record of all 4 children being baptised together on 8 Feb 1852 in Romaldkirk.

There is another Sowerby family in the area in 1851 with similar first names but they stayed in the area as I have tracked them in order to discount them.

It could be that the John the father on the wedding cert is a fiction - I don't think that an was uncommon ploy.

I appreciate all the thinking and help- so far it has put me in contact with 2 other great-granddaughters of John Sowerby which is great.
