WW1 Medal Cards - Guidance please!!!!
« on: Wednesday 11 May 05 16:14 BST (UK) »
I've just finally traced my GGrandfather's WW1 medals card and could do with a little guidance, please!!!

Theatre of War first served in is : (1). Any ideas what this means?
What does the "Regiment No." signify? Is this his personal number or one for the Regiment? He was a South Staffs soldier and other South Staffs soldiers have different numbers, so I'm a little confused!!!

Many thanks for any help given.

The theatre of war is the entire land sea and air that may become or is involved in the war operations. The number is their regimental number.

More can be found about the Soth Staffs regiment at

Hi Steve

Just seen your message about the medal index card - You might like have a look at the Great War Forum site where there is a section on interpreting medal index cards (MIC) Here is the address

Then go to interpreting MIC's

There are lots of people there who are very helpful. If you put the image on I'm sure someone will help you. I did this and they explained mine to me.

Hope you find this useful.
