Can anyone help to decipher the forename of the Briarty witness to James Paterson's death record, please?

Cheers,

Rodeo

Looks like Emmit/Emmitt but then I can't zoom in to take a closer look.

Irwin or Ervin I think....Could this have been added to an existing thread rather than begin a new one?

Many thanks, Don and JJ. I had initially read it as Emmy.

Didn't have time to enlarge it earlier, but if you look at the forename, it looks a lot like Enmr which it isn't of course, but I think the person was having a time of it and struggling ( note shaky taller letters) so another person took the pen to finish with a lighter hand and more of a flourish....so a little contrived looking to be an actual signature. Hi JJ

Yes, I agree with you that, when enlarged, the name looks like it's written in two different hands.

No clue who this Briarty could be, as I can't find anyone by that name in Lovell's directory around that time.

Many thanks.

Cheers,

Rodeo

It might also be the beginning of an m with a sloppy c for McBriarty. Touble is neither of them may have known the man and just been signing as wittness...

Thanks for your replies, Tazzy and JJ.

Yes, Tazzy, I initially read it as Emmy or Emma.

The surname could well be McBriarty, as you say, JJ. Dunno. As I said, I can't find a Briarty in Lovell's.

Cheers,

Rodeo
