James Young
« on: Monday 16 January 12 12:22 GMT (UK) »
I'm searching for the parents of James Young who married Jean Dobbie or Dobie 7 July 1809 in the parish of Liberton. I believe they had 11 children from 1810 - 1838, James, Mary, Jean, Andrew, Thomas, Alexander, George, Henry, John, Janet and Henry.

I have found a record of birth for a James Young born 6 Jun 1781 with a twin brother David to parents Ninian Young and Janet Archibald of Hunters Hall but I feel he may have been too old to father children at the age of 57. If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

57 wouldn't be too old Stephen.I have one in my line, coincidentally also named James Young, who fathered his last child at a much older age. What it would depend on was how old the mother was.

Hi Stephen and welcome to Rootschat  :)

Do you have a date of death for him - or even 'a last seen on census' date? If he lived to 1855 or later, his parents' information would (hopefully) show on his death cert.

The census info, would give his approx age.

The family look as if they are  at Clearburn,Duddingston, Midlothian in 1841 - James is down as 50.

In the 1841, the ages were grouped into age bands, so he would be 50-54.

I don't think that he's Steven's though,  George  ;D

Steven - if they followed the traditional pattern of naming their children, the first son and second daughter should be named for James's parents - so here it might be James and Jean for his parents. Do you know who Jean's parent were?

I see that they were both of Liberton at their marriage

This looks like the family in 1851 with Jean/Jane as a widow

Back Street, Dalkeith
683 10 4

Jane Young, 63, wid, innkeeper, b. Liberton
George, s, 22,. lithographic printer, b. Edinburgh
Jessie, d, 16, b. Duddingston
Henry, s, 12, b. -do-
Jessie Keir, sister, wid, 40, retired teacher, b. Newton
Margaret Wilson, servant, 20, servant, b. Newton

I don't see any burials that would match for James so far  :-\

There's this possible baptism - but please note that it is only a possible as a considerable number of baptisms aren't available for various reasons:

Newton 13 Dec 1785
This day was born James lawful son to James Young and Armour Mortimer, Woolmote? and he was baptized the 3rd day of February one thousand seven hundred and eighty six years before these witnesses
<no witnesses listed>

added - I've found a Woolmet Mains to the SE of Harelaw on the old 6 ins OS maps
