John Bourne Cartwright
« on: Monday 16 January 12 19:38 GMT (UK) »
Hi All,
I have George Benj Beauchamp, brn 1903 Oxford, died abt Dec 1989 Hillingdon Middx. He married Mary Cartwright 5/5/1930 at St Gabriels, Deritend, Birm, Mary being the daughter of John Bourne Cartwright and Mary Yarnall, they were married 5/5/1892, at W/Brom Reg Off, Tipton. Any info ref said John Cartwright would be much appreciated, all the foregoing being boatmen, the cen records  have not revealed a Cartwright family as boatmen.

Does the marriage cert of George and Mary show her father John as being a boatman?

charlotte,
I do not know, I assumed that john carwright was a boatman; as a william bourne cartwright was also married to a jane yarnall and she is shown on the 1901 at st gabriel, birm, and william cartwright is shown as boatman away. I should not make assumptions!! that is all I can add to my last post hope this is useful.

the marriage cert would show what the son considered his father's occupation to be.

According to FreeBMD and West Midlands BMD, Mary YARNALL married John Cartwright BOURNE (not John Bourne CARTWRIGHT) - is this an error?

You might like to follow up this family:

1881
RG11; Piece 2936; Folio 37; Page 19 - Hanbury Terrace, Droitwich, Worcs
Thomas CARTWRIGHT  Head  40  Boatman  b. Droitwich
Ellen CARTWRIGHT  Wife  46  b. Droitwich
John CARTWRIGHT  Son  17  Boatman  b. Harefield, Middlesex
Alfred CARTWRIGHT  Son  10  Scholar  b. Droitwich
Eliza CARTWRIGHT  Dau  7  Scholar  b. Droitwich
Thomas CARTWRIGHT  Son  3  b. London

From FreeBMD:

Marriages Jun 1872

(possible spouses)
BOURNE,  Ellen
CARTWRIGHT,  Thomas
Birmingham 6d 178

If John was born pre-marriage, it's a possible explanation for the 2 versions of his name.

Added: Thomas' wife seems to be called Elizabeth in 1891, so this may be a red herring....

OK, this seems to be a fair match for the 1881 family above, but Thomas' wife is Elizabeth.  ???

1871
RG10; Piece 3088; Folio 53; Page 49 - Feeder Arm (Canal Boat), Harborne, Smethwick, Worcs
Thomas CARTWRIGHT  Head  34  Boat Steerer  b. Hanbury, Worcs
Elizabeth CARTWRIGHT  Wife  35  b. Droitwich
Hannah CARTWRIGHT  Dau  14  b. Droitwich
William CARTWRIGHT  Son  8  b. Droitwich       (Possible match for husband of Jane YARNALL?)
John CARTWRIGHT  Son  4  b. Hanbury
Alfred CARTWRIGHT  Son  8 months  b. Rickmansworth, Herts

1891
RG12; Piece 2343; Folio 42; Page 29 - Hanbury Terrace, Droitwich, Worcs
Thos. CARTWRIGHT  Head  53  Waterman  b. Hanbury
Elizth. CARTWRIGHT  Wife  56  b. Droitwich  (Deaf)
Thos. CARTWRIGHT  Son  13  Waterman  b. Droitwich

RG12; Piece 2343; Folio 42; Page 30 - Wharf, Hanbury St, Droitwich, Worcs
Jno. CARTWRIGHT  Captain  23  b. Harefield, Middlesex
Jno. BROAD  Mate  19  b. Wychbold, Worcs

Ages and birthplaces vary a bit, but this was the only Cartwright family I could see with canal connections.  As Charlotte said, John and Mary's marriage cert should give his father's name and occupation, which would confirm whether we're on the right lines.

Do you know when/where Mary Cartwright (who married George Beauchamp) was born?  If it was pre-1911, have you found her on the census?

Hi Chas
Mary Yarnall and Jane Yarnall were my Great Aunts thier brother George Yarnall was my Great Grandfather.
The Bourne and Cartwright families were boatmen from Doitwich at one time they worked for the Doitwich Salt Company travelling between Droitwich Gloucester and London.
John Bourne Cartwright and William Bourne Cartwright's father was Thomas Cartwright. John and William worked for Fellows Morton and Clayton mainly on the Birmingham London run.
I have other connections to the Beauchamp's from Oxford through the marriage of Grandmothers sister to William Lamsdon
Regards
Lorna
