Could it be that Elizabeth was also "Maria". I have a Maria Thompson b. 1800 marrying John Gilfillan b 1795.

Elizabeth married in 1874

If she was your Maria she would have been at least 73 when she married.
Elizabeth had a child in 1875

so she clearly wasn't in her 70s when she married.
