CHARLES MAYNARD MARSH
« on: Monday 13 February 12 10:32 GMT (UK) »
I have again hit a brickwall, hoping that someone can help me.

Charles was one of the younger brothers of my gt gt grandmother, born in Deal Kent in 1845. After his mother died he went to
live with his eldest brother William in Great Grimsby. I have found him on 1851, 1861, 1871 census. 1871 he was a ship's carpenter.

Also found his marriage ( I think!) Q3 1873 to Mary Jane Spight Glanford Brigg R D ref 7c 1546.

Mary Jane is on 1881 Census, as a shipwright's wife living Glanford Brigg but no Charles.

I can't find any further census records for him or anything on Freebmd for his death. If he dropped the Maynard then it's making it difficult.

So..... any ideas please!

Not much help - but I wondered if you had seen the son (Willie age 8 in 1881) as a lodger along with some Spights in 1891

Hi, William in this census as a lodger, has Charles H Spight 78 amd Chas jnr 33.
Living with North family, could wife Alice North have been a Spight before marriage??

Thanks for that. Have found marriage of William to Ellen Baker Q1 1896 Glanford Brigg 7a 966. Also on IGI father given as Charles Maynard Marsh, but this might mean he wasn't still alive. Have seen marriage certificates where father is entered as deceased.

Have also found death of Mary Jane Marsh Q3 1883 Glanford Brigg 7a 371. IGi shows buried 28th July 1883 Glanford Brigg aged 33.

This would explain Willie aged 8 in 1881 described as nurse child with the Spights. I think it means equivalent perhaps to being in care of a childminder, but actually living with grandparents. Wherever Charles Maynard might be, perhaps paying for Willie's care.
In 1891 Census  possibly Alice was a Spight, sister of Mary Jane?

It's a mystery! It's possible that Charles remarried.

Thanks.

Several of my rellies were ship carpenter and shipwright.
Some spent their life on long distance trips - children only appear every few years !!
some were on local - coastal or inland waterways, and children appear more frequently!!
They rarely appear in censuses etc as they were afloat and were not recorded unless in harbour
Some overseas trips lasted many years

Thanks Tina, will look back on the Census, Alice must be Mary Jane's sister, and find the family.

I had been wondering beady about boat building/ship building yards. Afraid I don't know much about Lincolnshire. Charles M's brother William Woodruff Marsh was a tidewaiter with the Customs, lived in Great Grimsby.

As you say not recorded on Census if at sea.

I'm not going to give up though!

Through Rootschat found my mother in law's half brother a couple of years ago. She had not heard of what happened to him for 80 odd years. Unfortunately he had died 1991.
