Hi,

Emma, William and Maria were probably christened in a church near to where the 11th Hussars were stationed in Dublin. If you are unable to find where the 11th Hussars were stationed maybe you could find that church by looking at a list of all the army barracks in Dublin. Offhand I know of two, Collins Barracks and Portobello Barrack. I am sure there are many more. It looks as though you may have to go the church route - Portobello Barracks  was a parish during the period 1857 to 1922.  Lets see what this message produces lol. The Dubs appear to have been hibernating since you last posted lol.

Kargil,

Did you ever find out where the 11th Hussars were stationed in Dublin?

The reason I ask is that my great-great-grandmother Anne Bowden married in Dublin in 1847 to Joseph Frith. I think Joseph was English and one explanation as to why he was in Ireland was that he was a soldier. May be he was in the 11th Hussars as well?

Thanks,
Simon

Kargil:
I think that the 11th was stationed in Newbridge. There is reference to that in the Ballina Chronicle September 26 1849. http://www.irelandoldnews.com/Mayo/1849/SEP.html

Actually there is a good list of regiments and where they were stationed at that time, not just in Ireland.

I found another reference to the Newbridge connection in Heather Asplin's wonderful site.
http://hometown.aol.co.uk/heatherasplin/CRIMSU.html
Sheppard    William    Private    1580    11th Hussars (Prince Albert's Own)    Prisoner/Wounded    Action at Balaklava    25 October 1854    b. Newbridge, enlisted 23 February 1853, Mother Ellen in Dublin. Lost Leg. Died July 1900

I guess you already have this item:
William Bentley - 11th Hussars
Memorial at York Cemetery, North Yorkshire - "In loving memory of Elizabeth the beloved wife of William Bentley who died June 24th 1858 aged 33 years. Also of William Bentley late T.Sergt. Major 11th Hussars and one of the Six Hundred at Balaklava 1854 who died March 1st 1891, aged 74."

As to the Parish, it is probably St. Conleth's.

Hope this helps!  Good luck.

Kargil, Chris:
You are both too kind!  My wife says I have too much time on my hands, lol. I think it is just a matter of knowing how to manipulate google and sorting the findings through the accumulated "trivia" one acquires over the years.
I am always happy when I am able to bring something of value to someone.

Hi kargil !

While looking for something else .... I came across this .......... and remembered this post!!  ..... but after the search for it ..... I've just realised that this is older than I thought - and you probably have this information already ....... but I'll post it just in case ............  ::) ::) ::)

Royal Hospital Kilmainham
A magnificent late 17th Century Classical building with Chapel - Great Hall - formal Gardens - burial grounds and artists studios - now home to Irish and International visual art.

http://www.irish-architecture.com/buildings_ireland/dublin/kilmainham/rhk.html

This may give you some ideas for maybe finding some extra information regarding family ..... ( though I don't know that for sure  - but it's worth a shot !!  :)  ) - you can check the national archives !

Pension records from the 17th century soldiers who had completed their agreed term of service and those who were wounded were entitled to pensions - they were known as Chelsea Pensioners after the Royal Hospital at Chelsea - which opened in 1692 - although most of them were ‘out-pensioners' who lived at home. Entries in the pension records are by order of precedence of regiment or corps in the British army and then chronological - so you need to know roughly the date of discharge in order to consult them. At the PRO the soldiers' pension records are held in four series ........

WO 116, 1715-1913 - medical
WO 117, 1823-1913 -  long service
WO 120, 1715-1857 - registers of pensioners
WO 121, 1782-1887 - certificates of pensioners' service

There are also registers for soldiers discharged to Kilmainham near Dublin these are held in WO 118 and WO 119   An index of Chelsea Pensioners for 1806-38 is available on microfiche from the Manchester and Lancashire Family History Society.
