C.W De Villiers. Attorney General Pretoria in 1913.
« on: Friday 24 February 12 11:41 GMT (UK) »
An article was placed  in a newspaper in New Zealand in 1913 entitled 'Missing Friends".

It was seeking the whereabouts of Louis Valentine De Villiers, then 30 years old, of Wynberg, South Africa and last known of in London in 1906. Believed to be heading for New Zealand.

The person to contact is C. W. De Villiers. 813 Attorney-General, Pretoria, S. Africa.

Can anyone advise me if there was a Attorney General C W De Villiers in Pretoria at this time and any info on him that may help me in finding out what the connection may be to Louis?

Regards,
John

Thanks rutti tutti & avm228,

I am slowly getting info on Louis Valentine de Villiers but it is not all quite fitting together, such as on his death certificate his parents are recorded as John Henry de Villiers & Marie Haveland. Occupation Chief Justice of South Africa.
Lots of questions to find answers to!

Who was the informant of the death? Death certificates can be error-prone as obviously the deceased cannot be consulted and the information is given by someone else who may never have known his parents (and in some cases by someone who did not know the deceased all that well).

Have you managed to ascertain the name of C.W. De Villiers' wife?

Hi avm228,

I have attached the Death Cert for Louis de Villiers.
No informant mentioned but it was probably his wife who supplied the information from what Louis would  have told her about himself in New Zealand.

I have just altered Marie's name on your above posting. If she is maria I will correct it again. I cannot see anything about a Maria/Marie in connection to John Henry De Villiers. Have you applied for a copy of his death notice which should have a will attached. That may list his family as beneficiaries. There is obviously a connection as JH is Charles Williams uncle and your Louis valentines cousin.
A mystery to be solved......

C.W.De Villiers is really a side issue in our search for Louis Valentine De Villers. We have his death certificate. He did not leave a will. He died aged 38 after illness. We have his birth date, from his war service record and his marriage and death certificates. As previously mentioned he gives his sister Evelyn as next of kin on his war record but not his parents. Were they dead by 1914. His parents names are on his marriage and death certificates. I read somewhere South Africa did not start official registration of births until 1900. How were births recorded before then? The problem is trying to connect Louis to his correct ancestoral line.
Thank you in anticipation
Annette
