Jeen Stewart of Arnygag plus Wardens
« on: Wednesday 07 March 12 21:06 GMT (UK) »
I would be very very grateful for any information on
1) a piece of land "Arnygag" near Dunkeld. Its whereabout.   2) Laird of Arnygag - father to Jeen Stewart of Arnygag.

Jeen Stewart - death about 1795 and marriage to James Warden 1739. The most amazing background reading comes up on the internet under their sons memoirs Hugh Warden.

I am a descendant and plan on visiting Dunkeld.  Any info much appreciated. Thanks. Ankaret

I can't find any reference to Arnygag (or similar) except in the memoirs you mention, and I wonder if the name has perhaps been mistranscribed from the original.

The marriage of James Warden and Jeen Stewart took place in Alyth, so perhaps the bride's home was nearer to Alyth than Dunkeld.

The only real clue I can see is that in Hugh Warden's journal it says that at the time of his death the Laird of Arnygag was Factor to the Duke of Atholl. If that is so, then maybe the archivist at Blair Castle would be able to help.  Best to write as she is only there on certain days.

The Memoirs make a wonderful read so thank you for highlighting them.
There is an error in the transcription as Arnygag should be Arnaguay in Strathtay sometimes written as Arngage.
Jean Stewart(b1712 in Dunkeld) was a member of the Stewarts of Ballechin. If you Google Arnaguay you will see James Irvine Robertson referring to her family but to get the full story you may need to access or buy Gordon McGregor's Red Book of Perthshire.
Jean's father was Robert Stewart 3rd of Arnaguay and he was indeed Factor to the Atholls. His will is on SP dated 1718.Her mother Elizabeth Man died 1764.
Jean and her sister Marjory sold Arnaguay in 1754 to the Atholls.
Interesting story. :)

Found this,  http://www.oldandsold.com/articles21/scotland-13.shtml
It refers to a Mr Christie and the Arnygag pasture.

Thank you for such valuable information.   Cambron... I sense you are an experienced researcher and I will have to search harder to find the "Will" you mention....SP stands for Scottish...?  I have pre ordered the book you mentioned...its out of print or unavailable right now.  Also my google search isnt maybe bringing up as much as yours did.

Eliz Man and Robert Stewart were completely new names for me. Wonderful.
Thanks to you others also. I am picking over every detail. And I will write to Atholls etc.

With regard to the Wardens..the family bible and details seems to be in America. Part the Warden clan hit Virginia. I am now tracing the Wardens who stayed behind. I have a problem. My original tree had Hugh as having a Thomas Warden that led to two Charles Stewart Wardens. But I see Hugh didnt have a Thomas. I have to reconcile that. Want to find that archive at Greenoch refered to. My nan was a Warden in name.

Thanks again. Ankaret.....

Thank you for the direction. I can confirm I have found The Red Book of Perthshire and the info was on page 883.  I see now that because the Arnaguay land was only in the family roughly three generations and was a sort of label or title that  distracted from the "Ballechin" lead.    The helpful word in tracing this was also "Strathtay".      I didnt find the "will" mentioned by Cambron... ..yet.

Completed.
