Hi gnu

The plot thickens. I've found a David Heel, born about 1818, Chesham, Bucks. and it appears that he might have had a sister Eliza (born about 1815, Standon, Hertfordshire) and this could tie in with Josiah's baptism record. There is also the possibility that David and Eliza had three others siblings, Nehemiah (b. 1812), Job (b. 1819) and Josiah (b. 1824), all born to Edward Heel and Charlotte Mirkins. I need to confirm all this.

If this is the correct link it looks as though William, Charlotte and Josiah went to live with their uncle David when they came out of the workhouse. I can't find anything to indicate what happened to Eliza and there doesn't seem to be any mention of the other parent.

I'll keep looking.

Regards.

Chris.

Hi gnu

Our posts must have crossed.

Thanks for the info and for all your help. It looks as though Eliza is certainly the mother but is there any sign of a father?

Regards.

Chris.

Nothing that I can see, Chris. As she's David's sister, she wouldn't have been married so it's unlikely that the father(s) would be named. There might be some paternity info/bastardy bonds (hate that name).  I've never found my grandfather's father in nearly 60 years of searching.

I'll see if there's anything in the local newspapers about the 1839 trial but it's a bit early for some reports so don't hold your breath.

...and Eliza Heel (23)charged with having unlawfully concealed the birth of her bastard child, there was no prosecution.

in the Newcastle Liberator Saturday July 6 1839

There's a birth reg for a Nehemiah Heel, Mar q, 1839, Chester le Street v 24 p 33.

That was a family name so I wonder if that was the child.

Hi gnu

I don't know if this is a red herring or if I'm going down the wrong path but I think that Eliza's son William married Elizabeth Powell in 1867.

I've found the record for that marriage (London England Marriages and Banns) and it states William's father as John Heel, a shoe maker. If this is the correct William and he was illegitimate, might a father have just been fabricated for the records?

Regards

Chris

Hi Chris

This happened quite often. My grandfather fabricated his!  There was no requirement of proof of parentage when a person got married.
