BROWN Allen
« on: Sunday 01 April 12 09:32 BST (UK) »
Hi there,

I am looking for info re a Allen BROWN who I believe married a Gertrude Mary MARKHAM in Nottingham - FreeBMD Dec 1896 7b 436.

I cannot find any definitive info before this re birth/family.

1911 census has him in Nottingham with his family. He puts his birthplace as Beeston, Bedfordshire in 1867.

1901 census has his family lodging with a Edward COPSE in Nottingham but no sign of Allen.

The 1871 census has an Allen BROWN with his mother and sisters in Biggleswade workhouse but not sure if this is the same person.  It is a good possibility.

I can find nothing in the freeBMD for a birth of an Allen BROWN in Beds at this time.

I appreciate that the marriage cert will give his father's name but wondered if I could gain any info here first.

That's about it.

Kind regards,

Mark.

Is this the same Allen Brown who was living in Beeston in 1881, age 16, a boarder, but who gives his birthplace as Stevenage?

Hi there Tazzie and BB.

My ONLY concrete record of him is in the 1911 census. He is recorded as Allan BROWN born 1867 aged 44 and being born at Beeston, Beds.

In the 1901 census his wife is living with her mother or sister (another mystery) as a lodger with three of their children. There is no sign of Allen.

With ambiguous information (birthplace Potton, Stevenage or Beeston) I think you have no option but to invest £9-25 in his marriage cert. Even then it may not be a lot of help, but it's a start

Yes, I think that you are probably right as I am having an awful lot of problems tracing his wife's family aswell.

Regards,

Mark.

Okay,

I am now in receipt of a copy of Allen Brown's marriage to Gertrude Mary Markham at St Paul's church in Hyson Green, Nottingham. Both are resident at 53, Bateman St at the time of the marriage.

Allen's father is given as John Brown, deceased. Allen's age is given as 27 and the date of the wedding is Dec 19th 1896, giving Allen's birth year as 1869 ish.

Hope this throws some light on my request.

Mark.

As I feared, it doesn't help very much, as there isn't a census where John, Elizabeth and Allan appear together.

We're now entering into the realm of speculation

John Brown married Elizabeth Jeeves on 25 Dec 1863 at Sandy

in 1871 in Biggleswade workhouse were
Elizabeth Brown marr 39 b Potton
Allen Brown 6 b Potton
Kate Brown 4 b Potton
Ann Brown 1 b Biggleswade

John & Elizabeth Brown baptised at Sandy
6 Dec 1873 Alletica Brown (female)
6 Jun 1875 Arthur

In the 1881 census in Huntingdon workhouse were
Elizabeth Brown widow 37 b Sandy
Kate Brown 14 b Sandy
Alice Brown 12 b London Middx
Arthur Brown 7 b Biggleswade
Henry Brown 1 b Sandy

This I think was probably the family of your Allen Brown - it'll take another £9-25 to see if the one born in Hitchin is yours.

There are a number of Allen Browns in Sandy from earlier generations. I suspect they're all connected. Once you have the birth certificate you'll need the 1863 marriage cert to get fathers' names.

Just to throw a spanner into it, David.

I have a match for a John/Allen BROWN in the same household in Biggleswade, 1871 census. John born 1823 and Allen born 1865.

I cannot see the actual data but perhaps this is my man ?????
