*Completed* Census Look-ups please - Margaret Dick
« on: Wednesday 04 April 12 12:16 BST (UK) »
Hope someone can help.

I haven't yet been able to find Margaret Dick b 1835 Garlieston/Sorbie in the 1871, 1891 and 1901 censuses.

In 1841 & 1851 she was living in Garlieston, 1861 Newton Stewart, and then in 1881 she was living in Beckenham, Kent. A web family tree site suggests that she must have returned to Garlieston at some stage as she apparently died there in 1908.

Hi gnu,

Thanks you very much for all of that valuable information. I hadn't expected to find that Margaret had moved to England by 1871; if I have my facts right, her son remained in Garlieston.  :-\

Hi gnu,

Thanks for your offer.  Below is the information I have been reviewing.

A Margaret Dick had a son registered as James John Dick at Garlieston in January 1863. The 1871 Garlieston census shows a James J Dally age 8 living with James and Mary Allen, who were house painters. I believe Mary to have been Margaret's sister; James Dally is entered as her nephew. James Dally stayed with this family at least until 1901 according to all the censuses.

In 1908 painter James John Dally married, and at his marriage registration, his mother was named as Margaret Dick (deceased), and his father as James John Dally, merchant reputed father (sic). As the reputed father James Dally was still alive, there is a possibility that he was the man born in Wigtown c 1840, who had been Inspector of the Poor, and at the time of his death in 1916 a seed, grain, and commission agent.

I now need to find James jr's death registration as it may shed more light on his reputed father.

M.

He died 26 August 1942 in Garlieston. Aged 79.  No father's name given just Margaret Dick.  Informant was Mary Dally (interesting), widow.

So no proof - just reputed. It might be worth seeing if there was some kind of maintenance/paternity order.
