Baptism in Reed in c1785-Hester Mallion
« on: Thursday 05 April 12 16:31 BST (UK) »
Dear all,

I am looking for the baptism of a Hester (may be Esther) Mallion (may be spelt Mallyon). She was born circa 1786 and I believe she came from Reed in Hertfordshire. Her parents were I think Thomas Mallion and Mary Mead who were married in Sawbridgeworth in 1785.

Any assistance anyone can offer would be much appreciated.

Keith

I have a Hester Mallion who was my great great great grandmother circa 1791 and coming from Hertfordshire and married Benjamin Truman.  Unfortunately don't have any baptism details.  I have her parents as being Thomas and Mary Mead.

I have a Hester Mallion who was my great great great grandmother circa 1791 and coming from Hertfordshire and married Benjamin Truman.  Unfortunately don't have any baptism details.  I have her parents as being Thomas and Mary Mead.

The marriage of Benjamin Trueman and Hester Mallion took place at Chingford on 7th November 1813. This Hester Mallion was a widow, so unless her first marriage was to someone also called Mallion, it is unlikely to be her maiden name.

I can find a baptism in Sawbridgeworth to Thomas and Mary Mallion (William bap 6 Nov 1786). I can't find any Mallion baptisms in Reed, but there are a number in the right time frame to a James and Sarah Mallion in Buckland just a mile and half away down the A10, but no Hester / Esther.

So it looks like Hester was born in Reed (according to two censuses) but not as Mallyon. She married a Mr Mallion, had a son James in abt 1810 (he appears on 1841 census with Esther Trueman and family). I think he is the same one who appears in 1851 born in Ponders End occupation Captain, and also fits with the James Mallion who died on 1 Feb 1877, probate to William Truman half brother - lighterman, both of Truman cottages, Clapton, Middx.

Ponders End didn't have its own church in 1810, so a baptism is most likely in Enfield. The closest I've found is a James Mallin s/o Thomas and Esther Mallin bapt Enfield 28 July 1811.

Assuming this is the right baptism and then looking for marriage of a Thomas Mallion to an Esther. There is a marriage for a Thomas Malyan (sic) to an Esther Hoy on 14 Nov 1807 at Reed which looks promising.

Just found this link which might be useful

http://www.hertfordshire-genealogy.co.uk/data/answers/answers-2002/ans-0253-hoy.htm

it's a bit old, but the person named at the bottom might still be contactable.
