Hi again!

Grasping at straws, but it could be that We should be looking for variations of "Anton Olsen" or "Anton Olafsen" in the Norwegian registers.

If he was 20-25 when he married YOB is 1868-73, too young to be in 1865 Census ....

The 1885 census for Kristiansand is online.

Showing two "Anton Olsen", which I beleive are too young.

But there is one "Ludvig Olsen" here:

http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=1&filnamn=f81001Kristiansand&gardpostnr=823&personpostnr=7982#nedre

Born 1869, saw mill worker...

Worth having a closer look at?

Hi Jan,
I'm not sure why I'm being told to look at the name 'Olsen' but I'm new at this so I'm sure there is a reason.
Just a moment ago I was going through ll the Anton Solbergs - one at a time and I think I have found a reference to him.
The list says 'Turned home: Norwegian-American'
last residence in America is listed as'Fremantle Australien'
year emigrated 1889 Year return Norway 1907.
"Notes- E.Overstroket av teller i all felt"       (I'd love to know what this is!!)
I don't speak Norwegian so I can't decipher all of it so I'll just write it down as I read it and maybe some kind soul could translate for me;

Census Dist Kaarby Parish Hof  Folktelling for 1910 for 0714 Hof herred.

1. Olav.O.Solberg 25.1.1877  g   sagmester ved dampsag
2.Anna Solberg     20.8.1884  g   gift med hrl
3. Lilly Solberg      16.2.1910  ug
4.Antonie Solberg  17.6.1899  ug
5.Antonie Solberg  8.3.1834    fampos fl   Botne Hillestad.Undersottes av fattigvae
                                                              senet mor av.rr.1 og 6
6.Anton.O.            23.10.1867 e    arbeider ved sagbruk (vand-)

Occup: Guldrubearbeider. Sagbruksarbeider
Residence 0014 Residence name Sletten Farm No Under 55 Prop 1%29%

It seems to me that this gould be the ONE!! I know that Anton was married in Fremantle Western Australia and having a sister named Lilly, was probably the reason for his daughter's name.
What do you think?

Goddag Milly, velkommen til hus (Hello Milly, welcome to our house),

I was going to suggest that we could move your topic to Research in Other Countries where I see that you have an unanswered topic already http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,587097.0.html but like everyone else I'm enjoying your story far too much. ;D

Your census record above looks very promising! If you don't get a translation by tomorrow I can ask one of my relatives to have a go.

I was going to ask that too but then thought i was being slow..

i assumed it could have been a derivation of son of Olaf..
Like english beginnings of Johnson..son of John

Hi Althea,
I thought of that just after I pressed the 'post' icon - I'm still on "L" plates with all this.
On looking at all the dates, I'm wondering if these may be family members, but maybe not my Gt Grandfather himself - Looking at Lilly's birth date it seems she may be too old to be my Gt Aunt as they were back in Australia by then. (Aussie archives state Ada Solberg & daughters sailed back home in 1904). So I just don't know what to think now  ???
Anyway, maybe a translation will shed some light  :)

This is the breakthrough on the Norwegian side!

I'll be able to do a more detailed translation a bit later, Anton seems to have been working i a goldmine i Australia...?!

Hi Jan,
That's surprising! But is does fit the times of the Australian Goldrush.
I have always known he was a sailor (one of the few things I was told by my father) but I'd never have guessed he was a gold miner!
Can't wait for the translation now - I wonder why they were listed as 'turned back from America' when they were in Fremantle W.A. ???
Maybe I'm the lucky one that gets the translation error!
