On ScotlandsPeople I am unable to find a register of birth in the church registers for Jess Mitchell born in Brechin 1835 + - a few years, the mother of James McHardy.

If you have checked all the OPRs, RC and Other Churches records of SP, using both Janet and Jess(ie), the overwhelming likelihood is that the record of Jess's baptism, if it ever existed, has not survived. This isn't unusual.

A much better source for the origin of Scottish given names is https://www.whatsinaname.net/female-names/Jessie.html

The name Jessica is extremely rare in Scotland before the middle of the 19th century, and Jessmaine is even rarer. There seems to be no foundation for the suggestion that Jessie, in Scotland, (unlike in England) is derived from Jessica or from Jessamine, but the actual origin remains obscure.
