Coastguard Records for Kerry - Martin HARRINGTON
« on: Monday 23 April 12 11:50 BST (UK) »
Hello Kerry board people  :D

I hope that someone may be able to check Kerry Records for evidence of a Coastguard named Martin HARRINGTON.

I believe he must have been posted around Ventry, Dingle and Caheratrant areas based on children's births. Martin married Mary Kennedy in 1829 in Dingle Chapel. According to records, he was originally from Coum, and also must have returned there at least for a short while as one child was also born in Coum in 1838.

The Coast guard reference comes from his son John HARRINGTON's 1858 Marriage certificate. I have found another reference in 1865 ( a daughter's marriage certificate) that he was a farmer. So am keen to check the bits I can.

Thank you very much in advance for time taken to consider this query.

Kind regards,

Laura

Hi Laura

I've checked the CG Establishment Books for the Dingle area from 1830 - 1860, and no Martin Harrington I'm afraid. I did however find a John, and a Bartholomew in the area in this timeframe.

Thanks very much for taking time to check Martin!

I have found a few people that arrived in Australia and noted parents having occupations that weren't true. Looks like my guy wanted his father's occupation to sound a little more interesting than farmer :)

Thank you again for checking this information for me.

Kind regards,

Laura

Laura,

I was wondering the exact same thing as the death certificate of John Harrington listed his father's (Martin Harrington) occupation as "coast-guard". Separate question: I know John married in Melbourne, Australia in 1858 but I don't know when and by what ship he arrived. His death certificate says "about 16 years Victoria" meaning he arrived circa 1852. Do you have any information on this??

Kind regards

Stephcar

Hello Stepcar,

Yes, There is actually an interesting story about John's arrival to Australia.

Are you a descendent this HARRINGTON family? Apart from myself, there are two others also descendants who have been compiling history of/about this line.

Looking forward to hearing from you. Feel free to message me separately, if you wish to.

Kind regards,

Laura

Laura444,
Thanks for the reply. I am descendant from Catherine Harrington who married John Carroll. Not sure how to do new message as only just joined Rootschat. Have stacks of information on the John Carroll / Catherine Harrington line if of interest...
