Afron?
« on: Wednesday 25 April 12 22:48 BST (UK) »
Any idea where "Denbigh - Afron" might be referring to? I've come across Afron as an element in a place name but I don't know if this is a village, a registration district or what.

Any help gratefully received.

Thanks

Mike

Could it possibly be Tanyfron a village in the Brymbo area?

Possibly. It is from a Shropshire census, so it's likely that the census taker wasn't familiar with the spelling - could be lots of places!

Thanks for replying.

If you give the name and year of the entry I'm sure people on here will give their opinions.

OK, see what anyone makes of this then.
1871 census, RG10 Piece 2793 Folio 11 Page 15

Catherine Williams aged 29, Birth year 1842, Denbighshire

If anyone can confirm the place of birth as Afron that would be great, but even better would be to positively ID it as somewhere else.

If anyone is looking for a challenge, tracking William and Catherine Williams further back in time would be very much appreciated.

Thanks for the suggestion

Mike

I think it could be Vron or Fron which could be short for Froncysyllte Denbighshire.I take it you haven't found the marriage for William and Catherine yet?

Froncysyllte looks a strong possible but we'd need a marriage for her  or a birth record of one of the children to find out her maiden name.

I do have access to the Llangollen parish records (which includes Vron/Fron)  which might show her if we had more info.

Thanks gnu

Good call. I've found that one already and he's filed under possible/very probable!  The place is right - his daughter Amy (my great grandmother) was born in Northwood. The trouble is it's such a common name in that area.

He's listed as a labourer here - in most of the later censuses "my" William Williams is a horse breaker, so it's very possible.

Thanks

Mike
