Bairstows of Ovenden, Halifax
« on: Saturday 12 May 12 21:38 BST (UK) »
I did a search on the name Bairstow and saw an old post that mentioned a Rootschat member, Marmaduke 123 having Bairstow ancestors in Ovenden.

I'd be interested in seeing this tree, if that's at all possible. My ggg grandfather, Thomas Hudson Oldfield married Mary Bairstow (born 1813) in or around 1834. Old family knowledge says that Mary's father was a mill owner in Ovenden.  I've also seen an entry in the London Gazette which links my Thomas Hudson Oldfield to Bairstow Brothers machinery manufacturers in Ovenden. The entry is as follows:

NOTICE is hereby given, that the Partnership heretofore subsisting between the undersigned, Thomas Bairstow, John Bairstow, Henry Peel, and Thomas Hudson Oldfield, in the trade or business of Machine Makers, carried on at Forest Mill, in Ovenden, in the parish of Halifax, and county of York, under the style or firm of Bairstow, Brothers, and Co., was this day dissolved by mutual consent, as to the said John Bairstow, and in future the business will be carried on by the said Thomas Bairstow, Henry Peel, and Thomas Hudson Oldfield on their separate account, who will pay and receive all debts owing- from and to the said partnership, in the regular course of business.—Witness our hands this 17th day of September, 1864.
Thomas Bairstow. Henry Peel, John Bairstow. Thomas Hudson Oldfield.

Are these anybody else's  Bairstows? I've found lots of likely looking people in Halifax at around the right time but can't pin my Mary Bairstow conclusively to any of the families.

Alternatively, any other snippets linking this Mary to a  branch of the Bairstow clan would be much appreciated. Mary Oldfield (nee Bairstow) can be seen on the 1851 census: HO107 Piece: 2298 Folio: 764 Page: 4 and on later ones. Her siblings (again from old family knowledge) were John, Sarah, William, Elizabeth, Janie (died aged 2), Harriet, Mary Jane,  Hannah and  Emma.

Thanks for reading and for any help.

Mike

Thomas and Mary's marriage from parish register doesn't give fathers' names.  Thomas was a clothdresser, the witnesses were James Bairstow and William Rushworth.  Neither bride nor groom signed.

30th Jan 1834 at Halifax Parish Church.

Thanks Libby

I've seen that one and have marked it as a highly probable! I'm having trouble finding a marriage betwen James Bairstow and a Hannah at the right time. I can see potential marriages to a Grace Riley and a Martha Oates, but neither really fits the bill so far in the way of siblings etc. Grace looks more likely than Martha at the moment and either one of them could be a second marriage, I suppose.

I really appreciate you taking the time to look this up, Libby. Can you see anything else that I'm missing?

Mike

Edit: Cross posted. OK, I hadn't seen that marriage entry, I'll examine that. M

I'm looking at the parish registers on FindMyPast - they don't seem to give as much detail as wherever you ae looking! Brilliant that it names James Bairstow as the witness - I bet he was her father and the Maria baptism is her.

I've also found Thomas Hudson Oldfield's baptism - it looks as though he was illegitimate but what are the odds on the absent father being called Hudson?!

Mike, I have a cd of Halifax Parish Registers.  If no-one has found the info for you I'll take a look through it tomorrow.

Excellent, thank you very much. I'm off to bed now though.

Just a thought - as Thomas didn't have a father's name to enter on his marriage certificate, I wonder whether that is why Mary's father is not named either?

Goodnight and thanks again

I found the marriage on Ancestry's West Yorkshire Parish Records database.

They must contain more detail than FindMyPast's records then.
