Raleigh Richard and wife Mary né Hart died in Waterford Ireland
« on: Saturday 26 May 12 19:28 BST (UK) »
Hi

I'm helping a german friend with searching her ancestors with the surname Raleigh.
Here is what we have found out until now with the help of other researchers:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,565503.0.html

If the persons in the Census of 1861 are the right ones, they came from Irland.
As my friend couldn't find any traces after this census and no death records in
England we thought at the possibility that they went back to Ireland.

Now we have just found in the "Ireland Civil Registration Indexes 1845 - 1958"
a Richard and a Mary Anne Raleigh who died in Waterford who could be a match.

Richard Raleigh *1825 +1885 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FTWC-6MQ
Mary Anne Raleigh *1830 +1873 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FRYN-R4W

Now we would like to know how we could find more information about this persons in
Ireland, so that we can verify if this are the same persons we are searching for or not.

We apreciate your help and want to thank you in advance.

Regards
Svenja

Hello,
it is difficult with the various spellings for the name.

1871 has a Jeremiah Riley 16 yrs cloth printer b Leeds
He has a sister Mary E aged 13 yrs.

They are 'son in law' and 'daughter in law' which would mean stepchildren then to Edward Schofield - the householder in the census. His wife is Mary.

Free BMD has a marriage in 1865 where Edward Schofield and Mary Riley are possible spouses.
http://www.yorkshirebmd.org.uk/ confirms this marriage but no details- just the indexes.

I hope this helps

Hi there Svenja

I know you have the marriage of Richard Raleigh and Mary Hart in 1855 in Leeds BUT

Have you noticed that in 1861 there is the marriage of a Richard Raleigh and Mary Anne Grannon in Leeds.

I'm just wondering (and I know it's rare for the time) BUT might Richard and his first wife have gotten divorced and remarried.....

....leaving Mary Hart 'Riley' to marry Edward Schofield and MAYBE Richard and his second wife Mary Anne G(r)annon to be the ones whose death you found in Waterford.

I know this is a long stretch to the imagination and would need a lot of checking !

Hi Svenja

Looks like my wild theory could be correct

I have just found Richard Raleigh and Mary Anne Grennan having a child in Waterford

Catherine Raleigh
21 Apr 1870
Waterford, Ireland
Father Richard Raleigh
Mother Mary Anne Grennan

Hi Svenja

Another twist to this tale

As you have already seen Mary Anne Grennan Raleigh died in 1873.

I have found this Richard Raleigh going on to marry a Francis Gertrude Walsh in 1877

Richard Raleigh
1877
District: Dublin North
Volume: 17
Page: 514

He also had a child with Frances

Mary Raleigh
11 Oct 1879
Waterford, Ireland
Father Richard Raleigh
Mother Frances Walsh Raleigh

So I did find this couple's church marriage record

http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details/28a0e10411554

Everything is matching up other than Richard's father's name which has been transcribed as Jacob - I'm not sure if this is a Latin version of Jeremiah - maybe someone else can help you there !

Hi Tara

Wow, this are great findings, thank you very much.

Jeremiah/Jeremias is not the same name as Jacob/James.

In how many and which documents is the father's name Jacob?

Thanks
Svenja

Hi Svenja,

Was your friend's ancestor born in Leeds or Ireland?
Do you have any other information which may help?

Tara's finds look good for the Raleigh/Grannon marriage but your friend would need certificates to check the information.

regards
heywood

Hi Heywood

She has got the marriage entry of 1853 in Leeds of Richard Raleigh and Mary Hart.
Marys parents were James and Mary Hart, Richards father was Jeremiah Raleigh.

Richard and Mary had a son also named Jeremiah and a daughter Mary Ellen.
But as I know my friend has only found this birth entries on the bdm index.

This children we can find in the Census of 1861 with grandparents James
and Mary Hart which were born in Ireland (Richard was not mentioned there)
and in the Census of 1871 as stepchildren of Edward Schofield in Leeds.

I also searched through some city directories of Leeds of the 1850s and 1860s
but I couldn't find the name Raleigh or Rayley, only the name Riley but no
Richard or Jeremiah and I also couldn't find a James Hart.

That's all we know about their life in Leeds. Richard seems to disapear from Leeds.
