Based on Rosaleen's age; have you looked at this birth as a possibility?
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FBB9-YJ3

Male Bower born Dublin South 1922
He could have been born in Holles Street and therefore registered in Dublin South

His marriage certifcate could be a good a source of information
Also if you can locate a baptism for him - church records sometimes had comments included
Kearney & Bourke/ Johns & Fox/ Mannion & Finan/ Donohoe & Curley
Byrne [Carthy], Keeffe/ Germaine, Butler/ McDermott, Giblin/ Lally, Dolan
Toole, Doran; Dowling, Grogan/ Reilly, Burke; Warren, Kidd [Lawless]/ Smith, Scally; Mangan, Rodgers/ Fahy, Calday; Staunton, Miller
Further generations:
Brophy Coleman Eathorn(e) Fahy Fitzpatrick Geraghty Haverty Keane Keogh Nowlan Rowe Walder

Thank you for the link. I've had a look at it and it states that the registration was in 1915. Also, I cannot see any reference to Holles Street. If he were born in 1922, the picture I found of him in the Irish Independent in 1934 would be about right. It is certainly another avenue to explore.

Thanks again.

Holles Street was just a suggestion for a Dublin South entry - some people only search the civil district for the addresses they have for people but some births were in hospitals and therefore registered elsewhere!

Also if there is a possibility that Denville was adopted, his natural mother may have lived with friends, relatives or even in an institution prior to his birth. This location could have been anywhere.

I must say that I hadn't really considered looking at unnamed children in birth records, but it would make a lot of sense to do so if the child were illegitimate. Also, I'll need to check whether addresses I have for my grandmother's family at the time were north or south of the river.

Your interest and help are much appreciated.

Many thanks to Adee101 for the PM referring me to the newsletter for St Edward's in Windsor, March this year - brilliant, and totally unexpected.

I have received Denville Bower's marriage certificate and it contains the following information :

*Denville Oswald Bower, aged 24 years, Bachelor, Plumber and Fitter, Field House Hostel, Bowbridge, Stroud - father Arthur Oswald Bower (deceased), Lieutenant H.M. Army.

*Rosaleen Harbourne, aged 22 years, Spinster, Draper's Assistant, 21 Paganhill Estate, Stroud - father Thomas Harbourne (deceased), Cloth Weaver.

They were married on 8th July, 1844 at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Beeches Green, Uplands, Stroud.

Having looked at the available census records for both Britain and Ireland, I can find nothing that might relate to either father. I have also drawn a blank with service records so far. Any suggestions as to how I might proceed would be much appreciated.

The year they were married was, of course, 1944, not 1844.
