Bird-In-Hand, Higham End, Raunds
« on: Wednesday 13 June 12 21:12 BST (UK) »
Good Evening

I wonder if someone has knowledge of Landlords of the above Pub since 1882,

One of my Great Uncles, Joseph Nunley was Landlord there until he put it up for Auction on the 1st June 1882, (I found a newspaper item from the Wellingborough News stating it was going to Auction and that Joseph was the proprietor).

I have since found a that his nephew Samuel Nunley according to the Probate record (see below) died there in 1929. The question I am asking is, did Samuel buy the pub from his uncle or did he purchase at a later date. (the 1891 census for Raunds show that Samuel was a Shoemaker and lived in Higham End, Raunds.

Regards

Hi Ridgeback.

I can not help with your request but I know that "deeiluka" here is
related to the Nunley's of Raunds.

Also "rancegal" is also very knowledgeable about the village.

Maybe contacting them might help.  :)

Hello Ridgeback.

Joseph Nunley was also a great great great uncle of mine.  :)

I'm not sure if I can answer your question, but I'll check through all my Nunley information for you.

Samuel Nunley senior was still a shoemaker but living in Grove St, Raunds in 1901. He was an Army Bootmaker and continuing to live in Grove St, Raunds in 1911. I have no record of him living at the Bird in the Hand Hotel, I'm afraid.

Maybe rancegal will have more knowledge of hotel keepers in those years.

However, I do have all sorts of Nunley information if it is of any use to you, including some information of Joseph's will signed in 1884.

(My gg-grandmother was a Nunley of Raunds.)

HI Dee.  :)

I think this might help a little Ridgeback.

It states it was sold to a Mr West(on) for £900.00 when
Joseph died.

Thank you Seahall for the contact, if it is OK with Dee I will PM her (I assume) shortly.

Dee, thank you for your response, I look forward to making contact with you.

It never ceases to amaze me the amount of information there is out there, all you have to do is ask.

Girls  ;D

Where was the Bird In Hand in Raunds?

I live 6 miles away in Higham Ferrers but have never heard of it.

I also worked in Raunds on occasions too.
