I agree - I can certainly make it read as crambecks. I've never heard of them though - is it a local name for something else?

That is such a beautiful cottage Johnner Kid.

Yes Ruskie, it is quite a gem -- the village had a number of them right up to the middle of the 1800s.
Much of the timber used is said to have been bog oak dug up when cutting peats in Lochar Moss.  They were the remains of ancient oaks preserved in the marsh that once filled much of the valley.

Thank you Sy - I love the interior photographs and am also very interested in the construction methods.

It is heartening to see these houses still standing and preserved. There should be more of it!  ;)
