Captain John Lewis
« on: Saturday 23 June 12 16:36 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for information on a John Lewis, who was a Mariner from the Llannon / Llanrhystyd area. He was born around 1828. I know that he was captain of a ship called Y Lois, registered in Aberystwyth. He's listed in the 1861 Census as a Mariner living with his wife Jane at Fferm Pantfallen. Any more information - on his parents, sea-faring would be gratefully received.
Thank you,  :)

Could you give the reference for the 1861 census so we can look at the entry, please?

You'll need his marriage cert to find out his father's name & then start to look for his parents. There's more than one John Lewis in Llanrhystyd and without further info, you could be following the wrong one.

This site is good for mariners and gives you info about going further

Cardiganshire, Llanbadarn Trefeglwys, District 8C Page 11. I have a wedding certificate for this John Lewis, which gives his father's name as David Lewis, but then I have struggled to find John Lewis on earlier census returns. I know that there are several John Lewis' in the area, but was hoping that only one of them would be a mariner! I've looked on the site you mention thank you, but think I will need to visit Kew at some point - do you know if this would give me more detailed biographical information?
Thank you.

what is the occupation for David Lewis? Do the names of the witnesses help?

Don't think his Kew records will help with his family, just his career.

I wouldn't bank on your John being the only mariner. It's not an uncommon occupation in the area.

The 1861 John has his Llansantffraid as his birthplace.
