'something' Green, Hammersmith
« on: Wednesday 27 June 12 11:25 BST (UK) »
Hello London Rootschatters.

My grandfather's birthplace is given as Shepherds Bush, Hammersmith. Many years ago, I asked an elderly uncle where they lived in Hammersmith. Although the name was on the tip of his tongue, the full name eluded him - it was 'something' Green.

Has anyone any idea where this might have been?

Many thanks,
Scobie

There also appears to be a Brook Green north of Hammersmith ...

There is no real way of telling is there as there are obviously quite a few ............. Greens in the area. The only way may be to check old electoral rolls.

What was your grandfather's name and dob? Someone on here may be able to narrow it down for you.

Or maybe even the 1911 census? Though we are not allowed to do lookups, you may be able to locate the family yourself.  :)

Hello again all.

There do seem to be a number of possible alternatives. Not as straightforward as I had hoped.

My uncle was very frustrated that he could not call the name to mind, but it cannot have been too obscure as he seemed to think that I should have heard of it.

The head of the family was a Henry (Edy) Collis married to Emma Sophia. They had 7 sons born there between 1884 and 1897. Soon after, they moved to Epsom in Surrey.

Mention of the 1911 census brings up another item. Does anyone know the local church for Shepherds Bush? The 1911 census shows that that they had 1 child that did not survive. Hopefully the church baptisms would give an indication of the name of that child.

Many thanks for your input and suggestions thus far. It is all very much appreciated.

Regards,
Scobie
