If he was actually in Shepherds Bush, then Starch Green or Brook Green would be favourites (or even Shepherds Bush Green ;)).
Both Turnham Green and Parsons Green are a fair way away from Shepherds Bush.

Hi

In 1891 and 1901 they are living in Beclow Rd Hammersmith - the 1901 sub-registration district is given as North Hammersmith including Starch Green

Hi

Going from Brook Green (my favourite) to Starch Green was . . . . .

"Cacklegoose Green" (Ravenscourt/Cathnor area)

Good little map ( and a mention )

The western end of Becklow Road is in the parish of St Saviour, called St Saviour Starch Green on Charles Booth's poverty map - not sure which end they lived though.

Jan ;)

They are in the eastern end of Becklow Road as in parish of St Luke - so probably not Starch Green  :-\

I wouldn't rule it out on that basis. The name Starch Green was originally given just to the green at the bottom of Askew Road, owing to the water from the pond (spring-fed) encouraging a number of laundries to be set up in the area. As these multiplied, the area covered by this name spread to a sizeable expanse and as an unofficial name, it would be no respecter of parish boundries. Becklow Road afterall is not that long (just around a couple of hundred yards).

Hi everyone.

I love the idea of Starch Green with the fascinating origin of the name. Or Cacklegoose Green. But I don't think I can just assume which is the correct Green. I will probably never be certain.

48 Becklow Road - does that property actually fall in the St. Savior parish (for the Collis baptism that I wish to check out?).

Is 48 Becklow Road an older property that would have been there in the 1890's, or is it a newer property than that time? If it is still the same basic building that the Collis's lived in, then a photogrph would be great if anyone can manage it.

Many thanks to everybody, a terrific response and very much appreciated.

Best regards to you all,
Scobie

Hi Scobie

Try using Google Street view, that might show you the house. Although looking at it, I think it is in the part of the road that has been redeveloped and there are flats there now.
