This could be 1860's or 70's.I suspect 60's as this ensemble is a bit old fashioned for a young man in the 70's.

In the 1870s W.H Vosper was in association with W H Schroeder in Sydney, and between 1890 and 97 he was working at 694 Collins street Sydney -

Schroeder was active between 1863 and 1891.

Don't know if that helps or not!

Thank you Wiggy

I did not realise we had a Collins Street in Sydney. I thought it was only Melbourne.
On the back of the photo it has from Sydney so could have been taken anywhere. The other photos in the album are all from Sydney and country NSW so maybe W. H Vosper was a travelling photographer for a time.
I did not have  information on the photographer and I am very happy to have your information on the movements of W. H Vosper.

Terri

The "from Sydney" on the back stands out as being a little bit odd.

Suggesting that this photographer was actually working somewhere else,  where he expected people to be impressed by that.

I thought W H Vosper may have been a travelling photographer at the time as there was no address just From Sydney.
I have about 100 photos taken in NSW and a lot of them were taken in Sydney around 1860 to 1880 and one photo I have by Andrew Chandler has “late of George St Sydney” . Another photo is by “Sydney Photographic Company” then hand written “& Murrurundi for a very few days only”. So it must have been a selling point when in the country areas to be a photographer from Sydney where there were a lot of photographers at the time and all the latest fashions and photographic equipment.
It makes it hard to know where the photos were taken to try and place relatives.

Terri

Well you are right, a lot of photographers travelled around.  But usually they would have an actual address at Sydney,  because they would expect quite a bit of repeat business for reprints.   Just saying "from Sydney" seems unusual.

Thank you Kennett
Wiggy was kind enough to advise that W H Vosper was in association with W H Schroeder in Sydney and W H Vosper may have advised his customers of this. It is just a guess on my part but he could also have talked people into getting extra copies at the time instead of having to communicate with Sydney in the future.
All very interesting.
