Would like to find out what happened to my 2 ancestors
« on: Monday 02 July 12 01:13 BST (UK) »
Hi,
Since my father began researching our family tree back in the early 80s, One big mystery has been what happened to my Great grand uncles.

The first was Niels Christian Prebensen born 2nd September, 1865 Odsted Denmark. He arrived in New Zealand with his family on the Punjaub 19th September, 1873 at Lyttleton. The family moved north to Greytown and eventually farm nearby at Ballance.
At some date during the 1880s Niels left the farm and the family - nothing beyond that point is known about him.

The second was his brother Hans Prebensen born 11th May, 1871 Horsens Denmark. He married Jane Banfield in 1895. They had one child Flora Jane Prebensen who died at 3 months of age (at Mangaweka). Hans was employed as a farmer at Mokauiti between 1905 and 1911 and then farmed at Aria between 1914 and 1917. During 1917 he had to register as an alien. Also he ran into financial problems at that time. Nothing beyond that point is known about him or his wife.

Any information or suggestions that would help find out happened to Hans or Niels would be very welcomed  :)

Hans is listed in the Electoral rolls under PREBENSON

1905-1906 in Egmont, 1911 & 1914 in Taumaranui

Jane PREBENSON appears in the same region as Hans in 1905-1905, 1911 & 1914.

An 'H Prebenson's land ballot in 1895:

Hi Ash

During 1917 he had to register as an alien.

Like you I have someone who married into the family, registered as an alien in 1917 and cannot find hair or hide of him since his marriage.

Very interesting. Particularly with KHP saying about registering as an alien in 1917. I'm wondering if that suggests a name change at that point. Does anybody know if such possible name changes were recorded? Or what they might have changed it too?

No idea, but I notice on the other forums for your family, that there could be other possibilities of spelling the surname .....PREBISON, PREBEUSON.

Hello...

This is more likely than not the father's probate.

Maybe it mentions his children, possibly even the one you lost track of in the 1880's (Niels)

You may want to start a new thread entitled "Wellington Archives Probate look-up - PREBENSEN"

Then with any luck someone will visit Wellington Archives on your behalf, take photos of the probate and then email the photos to you.

There is no cost to you except for the debt of gratitude.

Here is an example of a Probate look-up thread...
