Sydney Leonard Hampton
« on: Thursday 12 July 12 19:55 BST (UK) »
Walter Leonard Elton was born in Leicester in 1884.
He died in East Ham on the 6th June, 1951. His record in the probate summary book give an alternate name of Sydney Leonard Hampton.
The London electoral registers show him under this name in Gerrard Place with an abode of 35 Hartley Avenue, East Ham, the same address as in the probate record. The telephone books also show him under the alternative name with the additional information that he is a musical director and orchestrator.
I have found him in Aldershot in 1911 (still called Elton) where he is working at the garrison theatre as musical director.
In 1901 he is still in Leicester where he is a plumber's apprentice.

I cannot find anything about him under the Hampton name and was wondering if anyone else could shed any light on him, please.

Peter

Could it have been a stage name given his occupation?

Yes, I would imagine so!

But I can't find out anything about him under either name, other than the records above.

I believe  this was my mother's first husband who used to be connected to music in the music halls before the war. She told me when she left him he was living with his sister or sisters in Leicester. My mother was separated from him in the late forties but it is his name that is on my birth certificate as my parents were not then married. My whole name has always contained Elton. I know they travelled to the States together but I do not know much about him. My mother told me she was left a legacy in his will but my biological father would not let her inherit it. My mother was working at the BBC at the time she met him which I think must have been in the thirties some time. He was a lot older than my mother. I am sorry but that is about all the information I know about him.
