400 years of the Botting Family
« on: Thursday 09 August 12 20:54 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I have been trying to find a copy of the book, "Pick, Plough, Hammer, Barrel: 400 years of the Bottings, 1597-1997" by Alan Botting, with no success.

I understand it covers the history of the Botting family from Sussex who then moved into Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.  So far Google has not come up with a copy closer than the Library in Canberra, but as I am based in Sussex this is a bit impossible!!

Does anyone know where I could get hold of a copy - either here in the UK or in Australia where I believe it was published - I have tried unsuccessfully to email the author - the address does not appear to be current.

Thanks you very much.

Hi Liz,

Do you know who published it ? They might be able to help, either with contact details, or passing a message on.

regards,
Bob

Hi Liz,

Have you looked on theBottings.com site if not there is a lot of info on the Sussex side of the family.

Hi,

Thank you both.  The Botting site is interesting but unfortunately there's nothing on it about how to get hold of the book - which may mean it is no longer available.

However, following Bob's idea of looking for the publisher (which isn't listed) I have now found the author's address (sadly no email), but googling his address led me to find him on Facebook!

I will get my nephew to try to contact him (I don't have a clue about how Facebook operates!) - I assume though that if he has a profile that is public enough for me to be able to identify him my nephew who is a member should be able to to send him a message perhaps ...  ::)

Hi Liz

I think that you are in luck :) as I have spoken to my brother tonight and he has a copy of the said document.
My mums brother Albert Ridgers married Edith Botting in 1941 (Q sept 1941 Chatham vol 2a pg 3785). Some of the information for this couple is not correct in the book.
The book was given to my Brother some years ago by Edith.

I am not sure if you are related to the Botting family but if you would like further info send me a PM

Regards

Bit of a random adjunct, but my husband (originally from Horsham) is good friends with a Botting family from around that area, from his youth. Liz: you don't know a Vincent and/or Jim Botting by any chance, do you?

Hi, thanks for replying.  I am indeed related to the Bottings - my mother's maternal Grandmother was a Botting and another line of Bottings pop up in the 18th century on my mother's paternal side.  Both Sussex families through and through.

I don't recognise those names from Horsham but will ask my Mum later  8)

Len ... I will pm you...
