Morgan Family at Zoar Chapel
« on: Tuesday 02 October 12 00:58 BST (UK) »
My grandfather was William Edwards Morgan (1902-1984)  His parents were Lewis and Annie (Edwards) Morgan, both of the area around Cowbridge/Bonvilston  Lewis (b. 1867, went to America in 1898) was the son of Daniel Morgan and Catherine Matthews.  Daniel and his sons worked in the Cymmer colliery, or so I'm told.  Daniel Morgan and his wife were buried at Zoar Chapel, in Bonvilston, and have one of the few tombstones written in Welsh.  I have been told the family was connected in some way to Ioan Trithid, a poet of some note in the area.

I was wondering if anyone might know if this family has relatives still in the area, and a clue as to who Daniel and Catherine's parents were?  I'm in the US so my access to UK resources is limited, and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
Did Lewis have siblings
William
Thomas
Ebenezer
Mary
Sarah
Elizabeth
Morgan
If so Daniel & his eldest son were carpenters the others miners.
I can find no trace of the poet you mention but there is a Ioan Tegid 1792-1852

Hi

I have been told the family was connected in some way to Ioan Trithid, a poet of some note in the area.

Whilst googling Ioan Trithyd - bardic name of John Morgan of Llantrithyd he was a distinguished local poet etc also a mention of him from other Rootschatters, so maybe they might be able to help with the connection to your Morgan family.

All the best

Z :)

Thanks for the response, and yes, that is the correct family, those are my great-grandfather's brothers and sisters.  And yes, that is the correct Ioan Trithyd.  He married a sister of my great great grandmother, Catherine Matthews, who married Daniel Morgan.  At least I believe that to be the case.
