The forest of dean burial and the coal merchant, the age discrepancy would seem easily understandable, the 20 year old daughter in law of a77year old
hmm- last child at 40 now aged 37 with 20 yr old wife, possible but where is he

the freebmd, ledbury reistration distict covers a number of little villages, I would want a bit more for that one

just my thoughts

        Thanks for your thoughts.
After nearly 12 yrs of researching my Whitehouse boatmen/coal + timber dealers, I thought I could be making a little headway with this
one.
Wishful thinking I suppose, could the d-in-law have been g.daug.-in-law, could Mary-Ann have been overwritten ,hence Margaret, could
Mary-Ann also have called herself just Ann?
A bit wary of buying another wrong cert.

Does this help?

Ledbury had a canal to gloucester with a wharf not far from bye st., the canal would have had a lucrative coal trade until the railway arrived in the 1850's, killing the canal trade in coal almost instantly.

forced to quit her boat and living with her dau-in law, the death could have been registered by a non family member but the boatpeoples burial arranged by family with her correct name being used.

I can well see the niceties of civil registration not playing a large part in their lives.

I was toying with the idea that this Mary or Margaret was in fact Ann(Mary Ann?)

1851 census Canal Basin Hereford

Boat Providence
Ann    Whitehouse  w   63   boat owner  Stafford
Jacob                            21    b/man           not known
Thomas                         23    ....                  ....

Jacob was my 2xg grandfather, have all info re.him + siblings . Pity the above census does'nt give relationships.
I think I will have to send for death cert, hope it may state who she was the widow of.

Jackie
ps.Jacobs brother Noah at same place on boat Eliza.

If you have not done so already you will find many references to your Whitehouse family, and paricularly Jacob Whitehouse, in the Hereford newspapers at The British Newspaper Archive. Mainly their numerous appearances in court for assault.

Strangely one of Jacobs punch ups was in the Hop Pole Inn. I hope it is quieter tonight as I will be in there in the next half hour!

Hello Dave
Thankyou for replying to my post.
Yes I have seen the newspaper reports, it seems the two elder brothers Rich.+Tom just did not get on with younger Jacob + Noah,
fighting + sueing each other over planks of wood!!
Jacob struck either his broth-in-law or father -in-law (John Hodgetts) with his billycock! and it seems the Whitehouse women also got
involved in these punch-ups. I love it!!!

Jackie.
