Samuel Lingard Chemical Worker
« on: Thursday 18 October 12 15:05 BST (UK) »
Hello

Have just received marriage certificate for my Great x 2 Grandfather Samuel Lingard. His occupation and that of his Father is given as chemical worker. He lived in Clayton, Manchester and married in 1876. Does anyone know what chemicals he would be working with or what company he could be working for? A further clue is that he is an acetic acid distiller on my Great Grandmother's birth certificate (thought this might be vinegar) Any help much appreciated -  Jean

An Acetic acid maker is a distiller who heats a mixture of crude calcium acetate with sulphuric acid of known strength, by means of steam coils to make pure acetic acid; shovels or empties sacks of lime acetate into tank; opens valves and starts and stops mechanical stirrer; removes residue from tank with shovel. (A Dictionary of Occupational Terms).  Vinegar is roughly 8% acetic acid by volume. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acetic_acid

Clayton Aniline Company a possible, dye manufacturer (uses acetic acid in the chemical process)
Around Manchester there were/are numerous chemical companies.
