The Black Hand Gang
« on: Saturday 20 October 12 11:49 BST (UK) »
Can any chatters provide any further info on the attached studio photograph.
as can be seen it was taken at the Pitchforth Studio Milton Street Saltburn and is inscribed in blue ink "Black hand gang"
I estimate the date to be around 1920`s
Do you know of the Black Hand Gang or recognize the subjects.

T.H. Pitchforth, photographer sold the Milton Street premises in 1908.

That puts your photograph much earlier?!

On the 1891 census he is a Photographer's Assistant.

So photo dates from 189? to 1908.

The uniform being worn is a 1903 pattern British army uniform so must have been taken after 1903. To further add to the mystery, I have a diary (written by a First World War Canadian stretcher bearer) in this diary is a mention of "went swimming with the Black Hand Gang".

Not sure if this is connected to the photo as there was often gangs of youths with various names,  but this Hull newspaper article mentions a "Black Hand Gang" in WW1 in relation to an East Yorkshire Regiment

http://www.hulldailymail.co.uk/Brutality-compassion-World-War-trenches-tragedy/story-20454081-detail/story.html

From article
"Seven of the ten-man death squad that killed Pte ..... [for desertion] formed a ruthless clique, which called itself the Black Hand Gang.
“When they were out of the trenches, they would commandeer an empty house and live in it,” Sgt Cavinder said.
“I don’t know where they got the paint from but they would plaster on the wall a hand with seven digits and the names of each chap.
“They didn’t know what fear was.”
Famed for its ruthlessness, the gang was always chosen to do the dirty jobs – whether leading an assault across no man’s land or killing a former comrade.
