William Henry Coates Lancashire and Melbourne?

Good Morning,
I've got a William Henry Coates born 27.7.1851 Ashton under Lyne son of James and Sarah who appears in England up to the 1881 census.

I've found a possible death for Ellen but the only thing I can find for William Henry is an online tree of a possible second wife Emily Ruth Stearne in 1889 Melbourne followed by a death in 1893 (birth date is the same).
But there's no registration of either event so I can't order a certificate and find out if he's the same man.The compiler says the info comes from a record with the Lancashire Volunteer rifles which I also can't track down.
Can anybody help find William Henry Coates and his family?
Grateful for any help.
