McMenamin - Co Donegal
« on: Friday 07 December 12 23:09 GMT (UK) »
Hello and good evening

I am trying to help a friend but I don't have much experience of Irish research.

I'd like to know if my understanding so far correct? Any pointers of what steps to take next or any leads will be very gratefully appreciated!
So for the amount of info I'm about to give, it's to show where/how I've got info from.

-William MCMENAMIN married in Glasgow in July 1906, aged 25 (bn c1881). Parents were Thomas McMenamin and Hannah Friel. Roman Catholic.

-1911 census in Glasgow aged 31, (bn c1880)

-1914 Army pension record, aged 33 and 134 days old. It confirmed wives name so I know it's for the right person. It says 'in or near what parish were you born': In the Parish of Old town, in or near the town of LetterKenny, in the County of Donegal.

I can't find the birth registration of William in Old Town or Letterkenny.

I've found a marriage for a Thomas M'Menamin and Hannah Friel in Oct-Nov-Dec 1879 in Dunfanaghy registration district, but I can't find Williams birth there either. I don't know any siblings. Williams marriage record shows that his father Thomas was deceased by July 1906.

So... Old Town is a Parish. Letterkenny is the town. County Donegal.
Letterkenny is within the Catholic Diocese of Raphoe, which is divided into six deaneries (six groupings of parishes). Deanery Region I' (Central) is Conwal & Leck (Letterkenny), Aughaninshin (Letterkenny), Glenswilly, and Ramelton.
The Roman Catholic Church in Letterkenny is St Eunans Cathedral but it wasn't built until 1901.
So, I think that means I need to be looking for McMenamin births in Letterkenny (Aughaninshin) parish?
I think the nearest graveyard was Old Leck Church, Letterkenny - but there are no photos of MeMenamin gravestones. I think they could have been too poor to have had gravestones.

I can't find any possible Thomas and Hannah McMenamins on the 1901 census.

I've been trying to read through all the Donegal resources mentioned on this board searching for these names but I'm thinking there must be a more methodical approach to take?  Would it be to locate and search the Roman Catholic baptism records, which church would it be?

Thanks for talking the time to read.  I will be very grateful for any pointers or branches for this tree.

Angelfish

---William married Johanna McGettigan in Glasgow but I don't know where she was born, but I notice there were McGettigans in the Letterkenny area.

Possible sibling for William McMenamin is Bridgit born 1880-
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FGJN-CQJ

Srukanreagh would be Sruhanreagh townland (Tullaghobegly civil parish, Dunfanaghy registration district and Poor Law Union)

What was William's occupation before he was in the Army? There's a William McMenamin in 1901 Scottish census that goves birthplace as Donegal and was a coal carter in Glasgow.

Aghadowey and Derrylass, thank you both so much for your help.

1906 in Glasgow Williams occupation as Railway Platelayer.
1914 his trade or calling is Hammerman (I presume this is still working on the railway)

So on the 1901 census, William could have been:
- a servant, aged 20, in Three Trees, Co Donegal who can read or write, whereas his family back at home are all down as cannot read or write.
- or, a Coal Carter in Glasgow, border with another McMenamin family. But (the transcription) gives his age as 26 when it should be more like 20.

Thanks again.

Just recapping..
William's mother Hannah should be the 34yr old woman living in Dunlewy, Donegal in 1901
The children listed match with those on my previous post!
She is a widow, which is consistent with William's 1906 marriage

The ages of Bridget and Kate seem to fluctaute wildly by 1911
