Button Makers in Birmingham.
« on: Wednesday 19 December 12 23:06 GMT (UK) »
Still Researching the Wrights...

Seems they owned a lot of Properties In Aston...

Property in Dartmouth Street and Heneage Street  Mortgaged to John Richards...Button Maker. 5.4.1835.
Assignment and further mortgage for £200.

Question... Cannot find any records apart from the details I have ...

Reason for the question....Does John Richards still exist?(I mean his Descendants)...

Are there still Button Makers in this area.

Any Info would be greatly appreciated.

Brian

Was the property a private house or business premises?

If it was business premises then you are looking for a John Richards living at a different address and there were 28 entries on the Warwickshire 1841 for that name in an appropriate age range.  You would have to download each image and check his occupation

Do you have John Richards on any census showing whether he was married with children?

Find My Past allows a census search by address but it is a pay per view site

Hi CaroleW.

Update for you...It seems that John Richards passed away 1837 and his Executor, Mark Perkins, a Gilt Toy Maker, took over the Mortgage !!!!!

From what I can find out it looks that both Premises were "Lock ups" as we would say.

Cannot find any Records to say that Mark Perkins Resided at either of the Premises...Can you help??

Brian.

Hi

Mark Perkins was aged 60 on the 1841 census and was occupying numbers 6 & 8 New Hall St  occ Gift & toy maker

You would have to buy credits to view the other addresses on the 1841 census on FindMyPast.

Birmingham Art Gallery has new galleries devoted to the history of Birmingham. A section of it is about button makers, with film of the process being done by a man in the present day but in the traditional style, by hand. Some wonderful examples of mother-of-pearl buttons on display too. Well worth a visit if you can. I think the surviving button maker is in the Jewellery Quarter and does talks on the subject.

Many thanks for that information cms. I am presently working on a family names Ensor who are all pearl button makers in Birmingham the sons of a William and Elizabeth Ensor born between1781 and 1793 in Birmingham all rejoice in spledid names Cephas Silas Felix(Philix) Jesse and the not so exotic Frederick all followed the trade and passed it on to thheir sons the daughters too were button finishers and/or button carders. I have other families making buttons in Birmingham too and would love to hear from anyone who has any information as to why the industry was centred in the City
