Tooles Cottages, North Dock
« on: Tuesday 08 January 13 16:01 GMT (UK) »
Im researching some of my wife's relatives who were recorded in the 1901 Census as living at Tooles Cottages, North Dock DED. Does anybody know where Tooles Coattages actually were?

no sign that I can see of a Toole's Cottages in street listings or the c1900 OSI map. The census forms list it as being in St. Thomas' civil parish, which covered the area east of O'Connell St., and south of Parnell St./Summerhill/Ballybough.

The only two 'Toole' entries (Court and Lane) in street lists are both Southside near Pearse St.

This Toole's Cottages seem to consist of just 4 houses and might be an informal name. I suspect these were located in the area south of Sheriff St. (i.e. Spencer Dock, Mayor St., Newfoundland St etc) where there a number of lanes and sets of cottages.

The only references I've found for Tooles Cottages always mention Newfoundland Street in the same breath, so if you find one, you've got the other.

And with St. Laurence O'Toole's R.C. Church nearby, you can't help but wonder at the derivation.

Thanks all for your help. The couple in question married in the Pro-Cathedral but the husband was living at the time with his sister and brother-in-law at Upper Oriel Street which is in the vicinity of Sherriff Street so suggestions about Newfoundland Street seem right. Thanks again.

Hi When my Toomey Ancesters entered the workhouse in 1904 their address was Tooles Cottages off Newfoundland street. I understand this was Gloucester Street South  St Mark TRinity a 6 house tenement.
