That last Baptism seems relevant, 'base born' and North Kelsey seem to fit with your 1871 suggestion (HO107/2117/124/4) and your 1841 Messingham (not far from Kelsey). The only fly in the ointment is the age in both cases (10 & 1). Your other baptism at West Halton agrees with age but not area !
This is very frustrating as it seems that tying up all the facts is close but not close enough !!
Have you any suggestions to what combination, if any, fit ?

You should re-read what has been posted I think.  There were two William SELBYs, both illegitimate, both with mothers called Martha, one bap in West Halton 1840, t'other in North Kelsey 1843.

Having re-read what has been posted, it would seem that I have two scenarios. The earlier baptism fits the earlier census (1841 & 1851) whilst the later baptism fits the later census( 1891 - 1911). Although the earlier baptism/census provide me with Mother & Grandparents, I think the anomalies in age and area prevent me from using the information with any certainty.
I shall put it on file in case of any future info., so very many thanks for the assistance,
