Manchester 1940s births in Prestbury
« on: Saturday 02 February 13 14:03 GMT (UK) »
During, and just after, WWII Manchester's maternity unit used three different premises in the safer suburbs of Prestbury Cheshire

My birth certificate gives my place of birth as St Marys Hospital [Village Branch] Prestbury R D [assume Rural District].

According to St Marys archivist this would have probably referred to Prestbury Hall, with Collar House being shown as Prestbury Main Branch, and Adlington Hall was reserved for wives of serviceman - my father was in a reserved occupation so that is ruled out.

I was under the impression I was born at Collar House by another Mancunian who was born there but it now seems I might have been born at Prestbury Hal,l but I am not 100% certain (the  archivist only said 'probably') !

Are there any Mancunians out there who were born at Prestbury Main Branch and know for certain this referred to Prestbury Hall?

I have no relatives to ask now, but would like to know just exactly where I was born.

This from http://www.prestburycheshire.com/hall.htm:

Col.P.M. Armitage purchased the Hall from the Legh Estates in April 1927. During the 1940/45 war the house was used as a maternity hospital as part of “The Country Branch” of St Mary’s Maternity Hospital, Manchester.

Thanks for that.

Saying it was part of the Country Branch confirms it was one of the three branches of St Marys. Just a pity the article didn't refer to it was the Village Branch.

Prestbury Hall is now up for sale on Right Move for £8,750,000!  I'm not a footballer so won't be making an offer.

Still hoping someone out there can confirm Prestbury Hall was St Marys Village Branch.

I was born at Collar House on August 12 1947. My recently acquired copy of a birth certificate
Says in column 1 St. Marys Hospital Prestbury RD. I thought RD was road but anyway my mother visited England in 1980 and had her photo taken at Collar Hall. In all my years I never heard her say I was born at St. Marys she always referred to it as Collar House or Hall. I wonder if the booklet is still available.É

Hi Ken
I got your email but my reply keeps bouncing back.
Is .co correct or should it be .com?

I was in Prestbury today 11/08/15 and my brother was saying that he was born there in 1950 as an overspill to St Mary's . He always believed he was born at Prestbury Hall.
