LEGGE, Uraian House, Dundas Street, Sale,
« on: Friday 08 February 13 21:29 GMT (UK) »
I have just discovered, via Trove, the death of a person on our tree that has be eluding me for 18 months, that of William Legge, a music Professor born 1829 in England. He died in Sale, Australia 2nd June 1876. Aged 47.
We had no idea that he he emigrated to Australia his family at the time of his death are resident in Manchester, England.
His address is shown a Urania House, Dundas Street, Sale.
I know that this is a long shot but has anyone out there any ideas as to whether the house still exists or knowledge of a William Legge music professor.

I would suggest it may be Urania Cottage, Dundas Street Sale.

From a later paper.....
DEATH. HEDLY.-On the 7th inst., at the residence of Mrs Jas. Peck, "Urania Cottage,"   Dundas-street Sale, Mary Briarly, widow of the late G. D. Hedly, M.D., Sale, in her 75th year.

Quite often a professor music was simply a music teacher.

In Sale by 1868....

This could be his arrival as an unassisted immigrant in Victoria...

LEGGE Wm  33 years arrived 3 Jul 1861 on the QUEEN OF THE MERSEY from Port B 191/003    The ship sailed from Liverpool and Wm's nationality was English.

Gippsland Times 16 Jan 1868

Speculative research :)

The only person of his name and age on the 1861 census that I can find has a wife Ann M,30 years and both born Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. He has been entered on the enumerator's form for the 1861 census but his entry has been crossed out.  There is a visitor Mary DREW, widow 60 years and possibly his mother in law :-\   Two children A Ann 6 and Frederick 1.

? his marriage
Marriages Sep 1851
LEGGE William  Dunmow  12/121
DREW    Ann MariaDunmow    12/121

Cando Thanks for all the information.

He as you say marry Ann Marie Drew at Dunmow in 1851.

I presume that the 1861 census you refer to is for 47 Burlington Street, the whole thing is a bit of a mess. As you observed he is crossed out and that fact has puzzled me. His wife Ann Maria Legge is on this census twice. she appears as Ann Maria Legg b 1831 staying at the Clifton Arms Hotel Blackpool. Also on that list at the hotel is Frederick Adolphus Fynney. FindMyPast have him as Hiney b Leek 1815 and a stockbroker. Ann Maria gives birth to his child Alfred Augustus on 13th May the following year and the child is raised as a Fynney despite that fact that his birth certificate shows William Legge as the father I note that he left England in July 1861. It is this relationship Legge/Fynney that is subject of our research. As to the census the responsible adult at 47 Burlington Street on the night of the census will have been Judith Drew 1801 Ann Marie mother. The two children shown are believe to be Williams. The discovery by you that William Legge arrived on the 3rd July 1861 is a vital piece of evidence. Thank you.
I wonder how long it took to sail from England to Australia in 1861.
Also thanks for the other information and links. I will obtain the copy certificate and view the links during the next couple of days at the moment life is interfering with Genealogy.

A fast clipper ship could do the trip in about 100 days, Boy Scout. But not everyone sailed on clipper ships.
