Charles Dalrymple, Schoolmaster
« on: Tuesday 19 February 13 14:53 GMT (UK) »
I wonder if anyone has more information on the above Charles Dalrymple?
I know he married Sarah McCall in Closeburn on 10 Feb 1786 but,for example, where did he teach, when and where was he born etc.
Look forward to receiving a few more clues.

Charles and Sarah had child Janet. Her birth is recorded in the Closeburn parish register on 20 Sept 1788 " Charles Dalrymple and Sarah McCall in DUMBRECK a Daughter, Janet"
Can anyone give me more information about Dumbreck in 1788?

At that period it was usual for the parish schoolmaster to be appointed clerk to the kirk session. It augmented his salary. He was frequently the precentor too. You might find some details about him in the session minutes.

A very good source of information about parishes at this period is the (Old) Statistical Account of Scotland. This can be found on line.

He would also have been a graduate of a Scottish university. The records of graduates of the various universities have been published.
