Marion Owen
« on: Friday 15 March 13 20:37 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to found out about Marion Owen born in Eastbourne abt 1885, her parents were James and Marion R Owen both from Glasgow.

I can't seem to find her birth or any death dates :( I have her on the 1911 census living with her sister Violet but can't find her on the 1901 census, where she must have left her parents home.

Any help would be most appreiciated  ;D

Hi,

There is a birth record of a Female Owen -

q1 1884, Eastbourne, Vol 2b Page 87

The above could be Marion, perhaps James and Marion had not decided on a name when they registered their daughter.

I have a family who registered all their children with no christian names, they simply appear on the GRO registers as either male or female.
I send for my grandfathers birth certificate to verify his date and place of birth.  All you will get on the cert is the usual parents names and mothers maiden surname, date and place of birth, fathers occupation.  Unless their was some other reason the birth would not be registered a second time nor would existing record be altered.

Apparently it was common for servants to be known by another name (usually less "posh") so maybe Minnie was the household name of Marion and as the head of the house would have completed the census it would be logical for him to put the name he knew her by.

I believe this is Marion/Minnie Owen as I now have her birth certificate and she was registered with no name.
she seems to disappear after 1911 so I am wondering if she emigrated perhaps with her sister to Canada or elsewhere in the world

There are quite a few M Owen & V Owen going to Wellington NZ 1911 onwards although I can't see any travelling together but the ages are right +/- a year
