Norton family Great Yarmouth - 1800
« on: Thursday 04 April 13 22:16 BST (UK) »
I am trying to research the children of Jeremiah Norton & Elizabeth Jillings who married in Great Yarmouth 2 March 1800.
Their children were -
Mary Ann b. 1811 ?

Lee Thomas b. 1816. m. Rebecca Garrard & then married Mary Tarlton. Lee worked on ships and died in 1862 from what I can tell, as his wife Mary remarried.

Richard Lee b. 1819 m. in Quebec City d. 1893- my line of descent (was a ship captain, probably steamers)

Martha m. Robert Brock and lived in Hackney d. 1877 - still looking for living descendants
children - Martha, Richard & Edward, lived to adulthood.

Edward b. 1825 ?

I don't have any information on Edward or his sister Mary Ann.

The father Jeremiah was a ship carpenter and died aboard the ship Norma in 1846. I am not sure what happened to the mother. The only other clue I have on the family is a letter that one of the Brock children wrote to their uncle Richard in Canada in 1883 and they were living at 93 Glenarm Rd. Hackney and they state they had been to Yarmouth to visit their aunt who was "very feeble". I have been able to trace the Brock family fairly well through the census and b/m/d records thanks to that letter.

Any thoughts on what else I can do for searching Mary Ann & Edward Norton?

Do you have proof that either of those children survived infancy?

By 1841, Mary Ann could have been married but if Edward was only born 1825 (25yrs after the marriage) he should show on the 1841 census.

When was Elizabeth born?  Was she still young enough to have given birth in 1825.  If I have the right 1841 entry - Jeremiah was between 70-74 so b 1771- 1777

Thank you for your reply. I have Elizabeth listed as being born in 1780, I know that according to the marriage record (index) she was listed as a widow when she married Jeremiah. Other than that I do not have nay more information on her.

I would question that birthyear if she was a widow when she married in 1800.

To have married, been widowed and then re-married all by the age of 20yrs old takes some doing.

You are right - it probably an earlier birth date for Elizabeth.

And no proof that they survived infancy.

They were both widows, maybe I can try and locate their first marriages! Yes this is the family, the only one you don't have listed is Richard Lee Norton.
Thank you for looking.
