O 'connell surname ?

is this an irish surname ? im researching philip o connell ive been told he has irish in him but in census records in michigan usa his bithplace is russia ukraine 1877 .were the irish in russia at the end of the 18 th century?and does anybody know why ? thanks mish

Very unusual birth place for an O'Connell !! but yes, absolutely O'Connell is an Irish surname and a very common one. Philip is bound to have had an Irish father or Grand Father. I can only imagine the father was in Ukraine as part of an Army - probably the British Army, but he may have gone further afield. I had a similar ancestor who disappeared in Ireland but resurfaced in the UK with a brood of South African and Maltese children and going on that info I was able to figure out his military career.

If I was you I would post on the Armed Forces board, where there are some super knowledgeable people who should be able to tell you what armies were in the region in the in 1870's.
